For my final portfolio project, I used the images of different fictional characters to create four different tarot cards. I will combined the images of the fictional characters with different images that each represent their respective tarot cards — Fleabag as The High Priestess, Katniss Everdeen as Strength, Lisbeth Salander as The Hermit, and Elizabeth Swann as Justice.

I was inspired to create tarot cards using collage by an artist group I’ve been following on Instagram for some time, 80s Vintage Comics, who create collages using vintage illustrations from the twentieth century and sometimes make collages for each Zodiac sign. I was also inspired by Jilian Adel, an artist who creates posters and advertisements for different films. The third artist who inspired my idea to create tarot cards was Tillie Walden.

The overarching theme of this project is to explore where I’m at my life currently, with each three of the tarot cards I’ve chosen being emblematic of different states of mind I’ve inhabited and struggles I’ve overcome. Using fictional characters for the collages enabled me to invoke what those characters represent for the audience to better understand what I’m trying to convey implicitly. Pop culture and fictional characters, as well as spirituality in fortunes and tarot, have been guideposts for me throughout my life. Bridging these two worlds in this project is an act of agency in a time of instability
